Ambient radioactivity data from S. Jorge island (Azores), since March 2022

The island of S. Jorge, in the Azores archipelago, has been one of the quietest islands in terms of volcanic and seismic events. However, seismicity levels raised abruptly on March 19th 2022, leading to an increase in the volcanic alert level for the island. The unexpected seismic swarm lead to unprecedented monitoring efforts. In that context INESC TEC performed an emergency field campaign for measuring ambient radioactivity at S. Jorge island.

The dataset includes measurements of soil radon gas concentration, gamma radiation, and environmental parameters (pressure and temperature) since March 31st 2022. The data was acquired at a station installed at Santo Amaro school (38.68N, -28.19W), in the Velas municipality. Radon gas is measured continuously outdoors in the soil subsurface (at a shallow depth of ~0.5m ) while gamma radiation and the environmental parameters are measured close to the radon sensor (< 3 m) but indoors (inside the school). Measurements were performed originally every 1-second, and aggregated into values every 2-hours (for radon concentration) and every1-minute (for the other parameters).

The files contain: a time stamp (yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM:SS) and the value of the corresponding parameter: Radon: radon gas concentration (Bq/m3) Gamma radiation: gamma ray counts (in counts/minute) Temperature: temperature (in deg C) Pressure: atmospheric pressure (hPa).
